Before you go to the woods:

  • Tell someone where you are going, your itinerary, what time will you be back, as well as a vehicle description and what you are wearing, and what gear you are carrying.
  • Take sufficient gear to sustain you during your trip.
  • Always check your back trail so it is familiar when you wish to return.
  • If you become lost or confused. Stop and think. Backtrack if possible, trust your compass. Don't travel more than a short distance unless you know where you are going. If a search is initiated for you it will start at the point you were last seen. Build a shelter, keep warm and hydrated, make noise.

The Essentials:

•  Matches or butane lighter in waterproof container

•  Map and compass (and know how to use them)

•  Extra clothing, dress in layers and keep dry

•  Extra water

•  Space Blanket

•  Cordage

•  Whistle

•  First Aide Kit

•  Headlamp or flashlight, with extra batteries
